Kent is the Garden of England which means that the county's best restaurants have access to an abundance of fresh local produce.

Look out for oysters from Whitstable, lamb from the Romney Marshes, Dover Sole and wine from the vineyards of Tenterden.

Although close to the capital, Kent retains much of its rural charm and a visit to this region would not be complete without sampling the food in one of the delightful, age old country dining pubs.

Situated midway between Canterbury and the coast, the brick-built Fitzwalter Arms has been thriving as a pub since 1702. It was originally the local hostelry for the nearby Goodnestone Estate (famous for its gardens and connections with Jane Austen), although crowds now come from far and wide to sample its no-frills modern food. Chef David Hart used to work at the high ranking Sportsman near Whitstable and his cooking is fiercely reliant on local produce (much of it free-range or organic); he also bakes his own bread and is a dab hand at skinning rabbits. His short menus are chalked up on a blackboard, and simplicity is the watchword: starters such as wild garlic soup or mackerel, tomato and onion tartlet might be followed by boiled collar bacon with colcannon and parsley sauce or poached fillet of sea trout with spring vegetables and hollandaise sauce. Desserts could include cinnamon fritters with pear purée and natural yoghurt; alternatively, wait 20 minutes for cooked-to-order hot chocolate pudding with banana ice cream, toffee sauce and brazil nuts.

W&B Tapas is as near to a Spanish bodega as you will get in south-east England, with white walls, a large mirror at the back, picture windows looking out onto the street and a menu that is peppered with authentic stuff.
